Small group class coached through barbell squats at Hartwell & Sons

Fourteen people, one coach, no passengers.

Group fitness works when the group is small enough for the coach to actually coach. At Hartwell & Sons, every class is hard-capped at 14 participants — not because of space, but because that's the number at which a single coach can watch every rep, cue every form issue, and still run a class with real energy. We run four formats across the week: HIIT Conditioning, Barbell Strength, Mobility Flow, and Early-Bird Circuits. Each format is designed to produce a specific physical outcome rather than just a good sweat. HIIT Conditioning targets cardiovascular capacity and power output. Barbell Strength builds raw strength through progressive overload with proper technique coaching built in. Mobility Flow addresses the range-of-motion limitations that hold most adults back from training effectively. Early-Bird Circuits combine compound movements and short rest intervals for members who train before 7:30 AM and need efficient, high-output sessions.

The four formats and what they deliver.

HIIT Conditioning

45 minutes of interval-based work targeting cardiovascular capacity, metabolic rate, and power output. Exercises rotate every six weeks so adaptation doesn't become a plateau. Suitable for all fitness levels — intensity is self-scaled within each station.

Barbell Strength

A 55-minute strength session built around the squat, deadlift, press, and row — the four movements that build the most functional strength for the most people. Technique is coached every session; loads are tracked and progressed over a 10-week cycle.

Mobility Flow

A 50-minute coach-led session targeting hip flexors, thoracic spine, shoulder girdle, and ankle mobility — the four areas most commonly restricting Philadelphia adults who sit at desks or stand all day. Not yoga, not stretching class: structured mobility work with measurable outcomes.

Early-Bird Circuits

The 5:30 AM and 6:15 AM slots. Compound movements in efficient circuits designed to hit every major muscle group in 40 minutes. Coffee not included, but there's a kettle at the front desk. The members who attend these sessions are the most consistent in the building.

“I've taken group classes at four gyms in Philadelphia over the past six years. Hartwell's Barbell Strength class is the first one where a coach actually stopped me mid-set to fix my bar path. That kind of attention at a group class price is what keeps me booking every week without thinking twice about it.”

Booking, drop-ins, and class passes.

Members on the Coached and All-In tiers book classes through the Hartwell member app up to seven days in advance. Open Gym members and non-members can book up to 48 hours ahead on a drop-in basis. Drop-in rate is $22 per class; a 10-class pass is available for $195, valid for 90 days. Classes that are full display a waitlist option — the app notifies you automatically if a spot opens. We ask that you cancel at least three hours before class if you can't make it, so the spot rolls to someone on the waitlist. Coaches arrive 10 minutes early if you want to ask questions or warm up with guidance before the session begins.
